Pastel paintings are very resilient and will retain their brilliance for decades as long as they are properly protected. Pastel paintings are always matted and framed under glass. Pastel paintings are done on papers of various types, using an infinite number of colored chalks. There are some modern misconceptions about pastels and pastel artist paintings, such as pastel paintings being done in only soft, muted tones. One of the reasons pastel paintings are so beautiful is the quality of the pure color particles and how they catch and refract light. My own pastel paintings are not comparable with those of the old masters.
