When to Get New Tires

Some people get tires regularly as a preventative measure.  If you want to get the most you can out of your tires, you may want to wait until they really need to be changed out.  You need some guidelines as to when you should get new tires.

The first thing you should do is measure the tread depth.  Many people use the penny method.  You insert a penny upside down into the groove.  If the tread goes below Abe Lincoln’s head, the tread is under 2/32nds and it is time for new tires.  If you want to be more accurate, go to a parts store and buy a tread gauge for a couple of dollars.  The least amount of tread you want is 2/32nds of an inch.

If you have bald spots or cord showing on your tires, you need to replace them.  Tires that are wearing unevenly need to be replaced.  At the same time, you need to find out what is causing your tires to wear unevenly.

Finally, people who rarely use their cars may find that their tires have dry-rotted.  If you go out to an infrequently-used car and see small cracks in the tires, it is time to have them replaced.  Always buy new tires when you need them.  For more information on car rental in Charleston, SC, visit Triangle Rent A Car today!
