Cash-back Mobile Phone Offers
I don’t know if I am the only one, but was looking for a cheap mobile phone a while back and saw a load of advertisements for free mobile phones with 12 months free line rental. The total cost of these deals was advertised as being zero, meaning a completely cost free mobile phone for 12 months! Unfortunately, to get one you have to pay your bill and then claim cash back from the retailer, so, they do not just hand over the goodies! They also set a few tasks for you to complete before they give you your free phone, for example you have to provide all the phone bills and make your claim between certain dates, but, as long as you “play the game” you can get a completely cost free mobile phone for 12 months! I think the key thing to watch out for is not to pay too much for your deal on the understanding that you will get all your money back. If you fail to make your claim on time and end up paying for your phone, you want to make sure you still get it for a fair price. In a sense, I would view the “free line rental” element as a sort of competition entry, i.e. you are given a chance to “win 100% cash back”, as it is far from guaranteed that you will actually get it. There are also instant cash-back offers advertised, where they will give you a refund on your handset there and then, however, these only apply to poor handsets on expensive tariffs. Personally I would have thought you would be better off either on a cheaper contract, or by getting a better phone. There are some weird and wonderful deals around, but they are increasingly complex, and reading the small print on them all is a task in itself, definitely for bargain hunters only!
